John Cohoon

My name is John Cohoon. I was born and raised in western Canada, in BC. I grew up in the countryside with many farms, gardens, some forest, the Canadian military and the Pacific Ocean nearby.

I worked for many years as a gardener/landscaper in Vancouver and the abundant plant-life is one of the things that drew me to Yunnan.

I received a TESL Canada certificate in 2003 while living in Victoria, BC and attended UBC (University of British Columbia), graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1982.

I'm a life-long learner and love working with smart, young people who are eager to learn. My favorite hobbies include listening to music, occasionally playing my guitar, reading, basketball and watching films and documentaries.

I've been in China for about three years; all of it in Yunnan. I taught at Yimen Zhuzhong near Long Quan Town in Yimen county for a year, then and I lived in Dali for three months in 2006. Since then, I've lived and worked in Kunming.

One of the things that drew me to China was the opportunity to witness the rapid and sweeping changes taking place here。 When Chinese friends ask me how long I plan to stay in China I usually reply, "Oh, probably forever …" – maybe I'll marry a Chinese woman, settle down in a place with a big banana tree in the courtyard garden and learn how to play a few Chinese instruments.

Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky once said, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take", so just try …
