Phil Taylor

Hello, my name is Phillip. Since leaving America in June 2007, I've traveled to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Last summer I received a scholarship to study Chinese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for two months. It was an incredible experience for me because I had never been out of the United States before. In the United States, I attended a university and received two Bachelor's Degrees: one in Anthropology and the other in International Studies. I also took three years of Chinese in the U.S.
For me life means two things: self improvement and helping others. The way I see it, self improvement is comprised of two parts: cultivating skills and eliminating shortcomings. Everyone has special skills and talents which they should cultivate through hard work. Everyone also has shortcomings like laziness, impatience, or a lack of respect for others. We should try to progressively eliminate these negative traits. In addition, helping others is just as important as self improvement. I often think: "Who can I thank for all the things I enjoy today?" Basically, I try to remember how other people have helped me, and I strive to help others whenever I can.
I plan on staying in China for a few more years. I want to continue to improve my teaching skills and my Chinese. I will return to the United States and attend graduate school. Eventually I would like to receive a Ph. D in Anthropology or History of Religions. In the course of my advanced studies, I am sure that I'll be coming back to China many times. China is changing at an incredible pace and I feel privileged to be able to experience these changes first hand.
Believe it or not, I do have a sense of humor. I don't have a girlfriend and I'm not married. I imagine that my wife will be smart, fun to be around, and caring. Now I just have to find her!
Finally, I really like my job. My long term career goal is to be a university professor, so I value all the experience I have gotten from teaching here. Sometimes the energy of children can bring you back to life when you feel tired. And the very best part of teaching: finding a 100% A's when grading tests!
